BGI to Build Shopping Mall at Mallam
Accra, June 3, GNA – BG International (BGI), a U.S-based development firm, says it has plans to build a shopping mall and a 3-star Hotel at Mallam Junction in the GA South District.
The project to be situated on 23,000 square metres of land will in the initial phase comprise a playing ground, six entertainment centres, 1,400 car parking space and over 1,000 retail stores.
Mr Irwin Barkan, Chief Executive Officer, BGI speaking at a public forum in Accra on Tuesday said the project would be located adjacent to the George W. Bush Motorway and the Accra-Takoradi Expressway interchange.
The forum was to explain to stakeholders and the community the need for the mall, the benefits to be derived and the details to the project.
He said the multipurpose complex, which will house several shopping stalls, restaurants and public facilities, would bring an assortment of leading North American, European and African brands to Accra.
He explained that the project will result in a sizable foreign direct investment into the Ghanaian economy and when completed yield significant tax revenue.
Mr Barkan said the project would commence this year and projected to be opened in 2016.
Mr John Domino, Senior Project Executive, BGI, said as part of the project, the roadway would be improved to enable customers to patronize the mall and also to eliminate traffic.
He said the company had also put in place environmental protection plans, where the flood level in the area would be reduced to 1.5 meters.
“We will also construct a safeguard to protect wildlife and minimize downstream silt infiltration,” he added.
He said as part of the project component, BGI will construct a new onsite sanitary waste treatment facility and an extensive recycling programme to manage its waste.
